    Description

    Here we have an
Antique, Brass, Maritime "CHAPMAN HUNTER PITCHOMETER" (Clinometer) Mfg. by James Hunter, Leith, Scotland.
    This is a Rare
    propeller pitchometer
(a type of clinometer) which was
patented by J. Chapman and J. Hunter in 1896
. It was used by inspectors to determine and verify the proper
    pitch of a
    ship’s
    screw propeller
.  This measurement instrument is made of heavy thick brass.  The main backing plate is approx. 10"L x 5-1/2" H and has an extendable rear leg.  It also has a front foldout arm that is attached to a large adjustment wheel which is used to measure the pitch angle and compare it to the calibration tables on the large backing plate.  This arm also includes a small spirit bubble vial which is intact and in working condition. The instrument is in very good condition with a nicely age patina finish.  No cracks, breaks or repairs.   The is a RARE instrument that your NEVER see up for auction on Ebay !!
